Resumo: | Faced with a sparse and fragmented field of studies, the researcher of Brazilian ballroom dances encounter enormous difficulties when needs constructing a literature review about the history of these dances. We intend to provide the subject researcher with a glimpse of the field which can facilitate this work. Therefore, the paper aims to analyze the scientific production of recent years, identifying in which areas research on the history of Maxixe and Samba de gafieira has been developing in Brazil. We searched for papers published in peer-reviewed journals between 2000 and 2021 in the Google Scholar, Scielo, Redalyc.org, and FGV library databases. We found that History is the most relevant area in the production of knowledge about Brazilian ballroom dancing's history. This area presents research on Brazilian popular music and the forms of leisure and associations of the working class in Rio de Janeiro in the late 19th century and early 20th century. After analyzing the materials founded, we concluded that the race-class key is essential for a less partial and biased understanding of Brazilian ballroom dancing's history. Keywords: literature review; maxixe; gafieira; brazilian ballroom dances; history. |

Keywords: literature review; maxixe; gafieira; brazilian ballroom dances; history.
