Resumo: Nursing Radiology is a new work field for nurses which require competency in critical care beyond common nursing abilities. The purpose of this descriptive study was to characterize nurses' profile and the structure of Interventional Radiology/Hemodynamic Units that perform minimally invasive procedures. Sample was constituted by 15 hospitals located in São Paulo city (Brazil) with a number of hospitals beds larger than 50. Two questionnaires were sent by mailing to the nurses: one about nurses' profile and the other one to collect data of the structure of the unit. The questionnaire about nurse's profile was answered by 56 nurses. The average number of nurses by unit at the governmental hospital was 2.8 and at the private hospitals was 2.2; mean time of profession 12.5 years, 67.9% had taken a specialization course, most of them in hospital administration. Of the nurses, 16.1% of them had a previous experience in radiology unit and only 17.9% was admitted to work priority at the radiology/hemodynamic unit. Half of the units have a physical structure that meets mandatory regulations. Few nurses has participated in study groups sessions on topics related to cardiovascular or radiology fields. Descriptors: Radiology; Interventional; Surgical procedures, minimally invasive; Nurses.
