Mothers’ perception of the communication process at the neonatal intensive care unit

Resumo: This study aimed to understand how mothers perceive their communication process with the nursing team during the hospitalization of newborns at the Neonatal Intensive Therapy Unit of a teaching hospital in the South of Brazil. Data were collected through semistructured interviews, held with seven mothers of infants hospitalized at this sector in 2007. Data analysis was qualitative. The mothers perceived that some nursing team members used the communication process inadequately; that the mechanization of care and the lack of Professional commitment influenced the communication process, in the understanding of messages as well as in interpersonal relationships and welcoming. The results revealed the need to prepare nursing professionals with regard to service to the family and the use of therapeutic communication, including teaching at undergraduate level and in-service education. Two essential aspects for care delivery to mothers at health care units should be highlighted: offering periodical courses to the nursing team about communication and family and inclusion of family and communication themes in professional education, with a view to preparing them for the challenging situations in family care.

La recolecta de datos fue conducida mediante entrevista semiestructurada, realizada con siete madres de recién-nacidos internados en este sector. El análisis de los datos fue de naturaleza cualitativa en 2007. Las madres percibieron que el proceso comunicacional era utilizado de forma inadecuada por algunos miembros del equipo de enfermería; que la mecanización del cuidado y la falta de compromiso profesional influenciaban el proceso de comunicación, tanto en la comprensión de las mensajes como en el relacionamiento interpersonal y en el acogimiento. Los resultados revelaron la necesidad de preparar los profesionales de enfermería sobre La atención a la familia y el uso da comunicación terapéutica, incluyendo su enseñanza en el pregrado y en la educación en servicio. Se debe resaltar dos puntos esenciales para el cuidado de las madres em las unidades asistenciales de salud: oferta periódica de momentos educativos para el equipo de salud sobre los temas comunicación y familia y la inclusión de los temas familia y comunicación en la formación de los profesionales con el intuito de prepararles para las situaciones desafiadoras en el cuidado a las familias.Este estudo teve como objetivo compreender a percepção da mãe sobre o processo comunicacional entre esta e a equipe de enfermagem na internação do recém-nascido na Unidade de Terapia Intensiva Neonatal de um hospital escola do sul do Brasil. Conduziu-se a coleta de dados mediante entrevista semi-estruturada, realizada com sete mães de recém-nascidos internados neste setor em 2007. A análise dos dados foi qualitativa. As mães perceberam que o processo comunicacional era utilizado de forma inadequada por alguns membros da equipe de enfermagem; que a mecanização do cuidado e a falta de compromisso profissional influenciavam no processo de comunicação, tanto na compreensão das mensagens quanto no relacionamento interpessoal e no acolhimento. Os resultados revelaram a necessidade de preparar os profissionais de enfermagem sobre o atendimento a família e o uso da comunicação terapêutica, incluindo o seu ensino na graduação e na educação em serviço.
