Resumo: ABSTRACT: Explanatory study by a quantitative approach to find out the meaning of being old/leprosy ill. The elderly people with leprosy diagnose and that have been attended in a public ambulatory service of João Pessoa – PB was the population study. The data were collected by interviewing and analyzed by content analysis, from which emerged three categories with its respective subcategories. We verify that the old ones express a devaluation of the society, especially from their families. The unknowing about the disease and the aging process reinforces prejudice, provoking family and society rejection feelings. KEY WORDS: Leprosy; Aging Health; Public Health Nursing.

KEY WORDS: Leprosy; Aging Health; Public Health Nursing.RESUMEN: Estudio exploratorio de abordaje cualitativo con el objetivo de averiguar el significado de ser anciano/enfermo de lepra. Compartieron de la investigación ancianos embestidos de lepra, atendidos en un servicio público de salud (ambulatorio) de Joao Pessoa - PB. Los datos colectados por entrevistas e analizados por análisis de contenido, donde se emergieron tres categorías con sus respetivas subcategorías. Hemos comprobado que los ancianos expresan una devaluación de la sociedad, sobretodo de la familia. El desconocimiento de la dolencia, y el proceso de envejecimiento refuerzan el estigma, causando en el anciano el sentimiento de rechazo, por parte de la familia e de la sociedad. PALABRAS - CLAVE: Lepra; Salud del Anciano; Enfermería en Salud Pública.RESUMO: Estudo exploratório de abordagem qualitativa, objetivando investigar o significado de ser idoso/doente de hanseníase. Participaram da pesquisa, idosos acometidos de hanseníase, atendidos em um serviço público ambulatorial de João Pessoa - PB. Os dados foram coletados através de entrevista e analisados mediante a análise de conteúdo, da qual emergiram três categorias com as respectivas subcategorias. Verificamos que os idosos expressam desvalorização da sociedade, especialmente da família. O desconhecimento da doença e o processo de envelhecimento reforçam o estigma, provocando sentimento de rejeição, por parte da família e da sociedade.
