Accidental exposures with potentially contaminated biological material involving nursing students of the final year

Resumo: | Health professionals and students are exposed to different risks in the services of health, among which the biological risk stands out as one of the most frequent and preoccupying ones. This descriptive study with a quantitative approach was carried out at a public university in the interior of São Paulo state and aimed to identify the occurrence and to describe the characteristics of occupational exposures involving potentially contaminated biological material among nursing students. Data were gotten through individual interview and all the ethical aspects were considered. Among the 74 students who were interviewed between February and July 2007, 30 reported accidental exposure to potentially contaminated biological material. Twenty-four (80.0%) of them mentioned cutaneous exposure, 5 (16.7%) percutaneous and 1 (3.3%) exposure of mucous tissue. It was concluded that the most frequent type of accidental exposure involving potentially contaminated biological material in this study was cutaneous exposure. Many of these exposures could have been avoided by the use of individual protection equipment. Descriptors: Students, Nursing; Occupational Exposure; Nursing. |

Estudio descriptivo y prospectivo con aproximación cuantitativa fue desarrollado en una universidad pública en el interior del estado de São Paulo y objetivó identificar las ocurrencias y describir las características de los accidentes ocupacionales con material biológico potencialmente contaminado entre los alumnos de graduación en enfermería. Los datos fueron obtenidos por intermedio de entrevista individual siendo los aspectos éticos observados. De los 74 estudiantes entrevistados, en el período de febrero a julio de 2007, 30 relataron exposición accidental con material biológico potencialmente contaminado. De estos, 24 (80.0%) mencionaron exposición cutánea, 5 (16.7%) percutánea y 1 (3.3%) exposición de mucosa. Se concluyó que el tipo de exposición accidental involucrando a material biológico potencialmente contaminado más frecuente en este estudio fue la exposición cutánea. Muchas de esas exposiciones podrían ser evitadas por el uso de equipos de protección individual. Este estudo descritivo com abordagem quantitativa foi desenvolvido em uma universidade pública no interior do Estado de São Paulo e objetivou verificar a ocorrência e descrever as características dos acidentes ocupacionais com material biológico potencialmente contaminado entre os graduandos de enfermagem. Os dados foram obtidos por meio de entrevista individual e os aspectos éticos foram contemplados. Dos 74 estudantes entrevistados, no período de fevereiro a julho de 2007, 30 relataram exposição acidental com material biológico potencialmente contaminado. Destes, 24 (80,0%) mencionaram exposição cutânea, cinco (16,7%) percutânea e um (3,3%) referiu exposição mucosa. Conclui-se que o tipo de exposição acidental envolvendo material biológico potencialmente contaminado mais frequente neste estudo foi a cutânea e que muitas dessas exposições poderiam ser evitadas pelo uso de equipamentos de proteção individual.
