Nursing students’ academic training and their perception of smoking

Resumo: | Smoking is a severe health problem that affects the global population the most effective and economically viable measure to minimize the negative impact of smoking on people’s health is health promotion and prevention. Health professionals are the agents who put these measures into practice. Academic nursing training deals with health education as a care strategy. In view of this situation, we carried out a study to get to know nursing students’ perception of smoking, in order to obtain information that can help us to plan the best way of addressing these contents in different undergraduate nursing subjects. It is a study carried out at a federal higher education institution between 2005 and 2006 among nursing course students. A questionnaire was used for data collection, followed by content analysis of the obtained answers. Results show a perception loaded with value judgments and earlier personal experiences about the theme. Thus, when planning to insert these contents into nursing course subjects, the question need to be taken into account. |

Los agentes de la implementación de esas medidas son los profesionales de salud. El enfermero tiene en su formación académica la educación en salud como una estrategia de cuidado. Ante ese cuadro realizamos un estudio para conocer la percepción de losestudiantes de enfermería acerca del tabaquismo, con objeto de obtener informaciones que puedan ayudarnos a planear la mejor forma de aproximar ese contenido en las diversas asignaturas ofrecidas en los curso de pregrado en enfermera. Es un estudio realizado en una institución de enseñanza superior federal entre los años de 2005 y 2006 con alumnos del curso de enfermería. Para recolectar los datos fue utilizado un cuestionario y posteriormente fue realizado el análisis de contenido de las respuestas obtenidas. Los resultados indican una percepción repleta de juicios de valor y experiencias personales previas respecto al tema. Así, es necesario que el planeo de la inserción de ese contenido en las asignaturas del curso de enfermería considere tal cuestión.O tabagismo é um grave problema de saúde pública que aflige a população mundial e a medida mais eficaz e economicamente viável para minimizar o impacto negativo do fumo na saúde das pessoas é a promoção e a prevenção em saúde desenvolvidas na atenção primária. Os agentes da implementação dessas medidas são os profissionais de saúde. O enfermeiro tem em sua formação acadêmica a educação em saúde enquanto uma estratégia de cuidado. O objetivo do presente estudo é conhecer a percepção dos estudantes de enfermagem acerca do tabagismo visando obter informações que possam nos auxiliar a planejar a melhor forma de abordar esse conteúdo nas diversas disciplinas oferecidas na graduação em enfermagem. O estudo foi realizado em uma instituição de ensino superior federal entre os anos de 2005 e 2006 com alunos do curso de enfermagem. Para coleta de dados foi utilizado um questionário e posteriormente foi realizada a análise de conteúdo das respostas obtidas. Os resultados apontam para uma percepção repleta de juízos de valor e experiências pessoais prévias a respeito do uso de tabaco.
