Life stories: traditional birth attendants and homebirth

Resumo: The objective of this issue is to show the possibility of using Oral Life Story as a methodological framework to collect data in a qualitative research, with the try to  understand the traditional birth attendant experiences while caring for the women during home delivery in a brazilian rural northeastern community.  The results reveal that the life story of those women takes part of an ancient knowledge which during the time offers significant contribution for the construction of a new glimpse in the search for the humanization of care health relationship. Facing the diversity of the cultural universe that involves this knowledge, considered as a solidarity practice, a God´s gift, knowing and respecting is a fundamental condition for a real approach between popular and scientific knowledge.

Facing the diversity of the cultural universe that involves this knowledge, considered as a solidarity practice, a God´s gift, knowing and respecting is a fundamental condition for a real approach between popular and scientific knowledge. El objetivo de este artículo consiste en mostrar la posibilidad de utilizar la Historia Oral de Vida como referencial metodológico para recolectar datos en una investigación cualitativa, con el fin de comprender el significado de la experiencia de las parteras tradicionales en el cuidado de la mujer, de una comunidad rural nordestina brasileña, durante el nacimiento en casa. Los resultados revelan que la historia de vida de esas mujeres forma parte de un conocimiento milenario que a lo largo del tiempo ha ofrecido contribuciones significativas para la construcción de una nueva mirada en la busca por la humanización del cuidado en las relaciones de salud. Frente a la diversidad del universo cultural involucrado en ese conocimiento, considerado como práctica solidaria, como un don Divino, conocer y respetar es una condición fundamental para una real aproximación entre el saber popular y el conocimiento científico.Esta é uma pesquisa qualitativa que utilizou a História Oral como caminho para investigar o fenômeno do nascimento em casa. Trata-se de compreender o significado da experiência de cuidar da mulher durante o processo de nascimento em domicilio em uma comunidade rural nordestina, a partir da história oral de vida das parteiras tradicionais. Os resultados revelam que a história de vida dessas mulheres se inscreve em um saber milenar que ao longo do tempo oferece significativa contribuição para a construção de um novo olhar em busca da humanização das relações no contexto da saúde, embora muito desse saber tenha sido desconsiderado com a institucionalização do cuidado.
