Characteristics of older adults suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and their main family caregivers

Resumo: This study aimed at characterizing older adults who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and their main family caregivers. It consists of a descriptive study, carried out in the municipality of Maringá-PR in the period between December 2010 and March 2011, involving eight caregivers. Data were collected through interviews and analyzed through statistical procedures, with analysis by simple frequency and absolute percentage. Most caregivers were female, with a mean age of 54.8 years, married, with 8 years of education or more, who had a health condition. Among the older adults, most of them were female with a mean age of 80.8 years, having 3 years of education or less, with comorbidities and in a moderate stage of the disease. Knowing the profile of caregivers and patients may contribute to the adoption of intervention strategies by health professionals in order to meet their needs in an individualized and humanized manner. Estudio descriptivo, realizado en municipio de Maringá-PR de diciembre 2010 a marzo 2011, desarrollado con 80 cuidadores. Datos recolectados mediante entrevista y analizados por procedimientos estadísticos con análisis de frecuencia simple y porcentual absoluto. La mayoría de los cuidadores era de sexo femenino, edad promedio 54,8 años, casados, con 8 o más años de estudios, poseían algún problema de salud. De los ancianos, la mayoría era de sexo femenino, edad promedio de 80,8 años, tenía 3 o menos años de escolarización, portaba comorbilidades y estaba en el estadio moderado de la enfermedad. Conocer el perfil de los cuidadores y enfermos puede ayudar a adoptar estrategias de intervención por parte de los profesionales de salud para que atiendan las necesidades de forma individualizada y humanizada. Conhecer o perfil dos cuidadores e doentes pode contribuir para adoção de estratégias de intervenção por parte dos profissionais de saúde que atendam as necessidades de forma individualizada e humanizada.
