Resumo: BACKGROUND: The Vitamin A Deficiency is a major nutritional deficiencies in Brazil, reaching 11,8% of children under five in the Midwest region. Although this is a moderate public health problem in this region, there are few studies that assess the nutritional status of vitamin A and its associated factors in the state of Goiás. OBJECTIVES: The present study aims to evaluate the nutritional status of vitamin A and its associated factors in one year old children assisted in Primary Care Health in Goiânia, Goiás. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with a sample consisting of 228 children, aged 12 to 14 months, assisted between June 2012 and February 2013 on 12 Primary Health Care Unit in Goiânia. The nutritional status of vitamin A was assessed by serum retinol concentration, determined by High Performace Liquid Chromatography. Multiple linear regression models with hierarchical selection of independent variables were used to evaluate the correlation between socioeconomic, environmental, maternal, anthropometric, breastfeeding, vitamin supplementation, morbidity variables and serum retinol concentration. RESULTS: The median serum retinol concentration was 1.3 μmol/L and the vitamin A deficiency was observed in 12,4% of children. Maternal schooling and hemoglobin concentration were positively correlated with serum retinol concentration, while C-reactive protein showed a negative correlation. CONCLUSION: The median serum retinol concentration was within the normal range, however, vitamin A deficiency is a moderate public health problem in one year children assisted in Primary Care Health in Goiânia, Goiás. Actions to promote maternal education, infection control and prevention of other micronutrient deficiencies of are important to prevent and combat this deficiency in this population.

Submitted by Jaqueline Silva (jtas29@gmail.com) on 2014-10-20T15:27:04Z No. of bitstreams: 2 Dissertação - Lara Lívia Santos da Silva - 2014.pdf: 2597418 bytes, checksum: 4a52f7762fdeab22b01cea647f5af777 (MD5) license_rdf: 23148 bytes, checksum: 9da0b6dfac957114c6a7714714b86306 (MD5)Approved for entry into archive by Jaqueline Silva (jtas29@gmail.com) on 2014-10-20T15:27:17Z (GMT) No. of bitstreams: 2 Dissertação - Lara Lívia Santos da Silva - 2014.pdf: 2597418 bytes, checksum: 4a52f7762fdeab22b01cea647f5af777 (MD5) license_rdf: 23148 bytes, checksum: 9da0b6dfac957114c6a7714714b86306 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2014-10-20T15:27:17Z (GMT).
