Resumo: | This research aims to reflect on the concept of sense of place and its presence in David Lynch's cinema. Therefore, the basis for working on this concept was the practical research carried out by sociologist David Hummon, between 1986 and 1992, which defines the sense of place in terms of the ways in which people build bonds with their communities and their surroundings, and how can they promote identities linked to places of living and living. We identified, in the cinematographic work of David Lynch, a practical application of this concept, mainly through the atmosphere created in his films. In this way, what we carry out in this research is a conceptual transport of an area, which is sociology, through Hummon's practical research, to cinema, specifically in some examples chosen in Lynch's work - which transforms the filmic atmosphere into a space for reflection on identities, a sense of community and the relationship with the Other. We will begin this research by dealing with the film Blue Velvet, realized in 1986, as well as bringing, throughout its development, other films by the director that helped us to deal with related concepts, such as several social segments presented. The film analysis used was based on a methodology that directed our gaze beyond the “immediately visible” and the symbolic in the chosen film to reach the sense of place. In this sense, the construction of a critical narrative about and for North American society proposed by Lynch in his films comes to dialogue with the approach guided by Hummon's sociological research. |

Para tanto, a base para trabalhar esse conceito foi a da pesquisa prática realizada pelo sociólogo David Hummon, entre 1986-1992, que define o sense of place em termos de formas através das quais as pessoas constroem laços com suas comunidades e seus arredores, e como elas podem promover identidades ligadas aos locais de moradia e convivência. Identificamos, na obra cinematográfica de David Lynch, uma aplicação prática desse conceito sobretudo através da atmosfera criada em seus filmes. Desse modo, o que realizamos nesta pesquisa é um transporte conceitual de uma área, que é a sociologia, por meio da pesquisa prática de Hummon, para o cinema, especificamente em alguns exemples escolhidos na obra de Lynch – que transforma a atmosfera fílmica em um espaço de reflexão sobre identidades, senso de comunidade e a relação com o Outro. Iniciaremos essa pesquisa ao tratar do filme Veludo Azul (Blue Velvet, 1986), assim como iremos trazer, ao longo do seu desenvolvimento, outros filmes do diretor que nos auxiliaram a tratar de conceitos correlatos, como os segmentos sociais apresentados. A análise fílmica utilizada teve como base uma metodologia que direcionou nosso olhar para além do “imediatamente visível” e do simbólico no filme escolhido para chegar ao sense of place.
