Resumo: The present study aims towards investigating the conception of childhood in the works of Candido Portinari. Taking the united visions of History with Sociology and the cultural processes as a form of analysis, the discussion favours the descriptions of the discoveries about the child. It also makes an attempt to bring a new perspective on the positions about childhood, considering elements of Art and Education. The issues that guided this research were: What was the path traveled by the concept of childhood? What was the route of the conception of child? Is there a distinguishing idea of these elements in the society of the XX and XXI centuries? How can the work of Portinari serve as dialogue and support in the discussion about the child and the conception of childhood in the XX and XXI centuries? Is there a conception of childhood portrayed in the work of Candido Portinari? Which elements of the life and production of the author may enrich the reflection about the child, the conception of childhood and Education? The movement that structures the chapters resembles the formation of the ciranda and the advances of the discussion trying to establish an interlocution with the work of Portinari. It begins with the presentation of the conceptions that prepare the field of ideas according to the authors ideas that enriched the necessary awakening about the question of childhood, composing a real circle of glimpses that guided the investigation. The first step towards the pretensions of presenting the conception of childhood in the work of the chosen artist and stimulating the understanding of the images that relay a particular message about the artistic and educational field was to show the premises of Àries and Heywood, contrast the world historiography about children with other authors, who enlarge the discussion specifically in Brazil. The questions about the sentiment of childhood, the iconography and the care devoted to the little ones in the family deserved special attention in this discussion. The next step was to bring the Sociology of the Practice by Bourdieu in order to investigate how the sociological point of view is capable of uncovering the ideologies that include the discussion of childhood and propose a less naïve vision of the social structure. This is especially true when the sociological point of view indicates the nuances in the artistic field and the history of Portinari as an artist. The interpretations specific to the sociological point of view were added in the third step, which besides going back to the events that began new glimpses of the question of childhood, put into context the painter s background and the movement that laid the groundwork for a new understanding of art: Modernism. The final step presents the conclusion of the initial proposal, when means of the artist s images, eight of them, from de decades of 1930, 1940, 1950 and 1960, two of each decade, promotes a sensitive of the work, since it brings back the issues highlighted in the other moments of the research and takes on the commitment of outlining the portrait of the child according to historic, social and cultural aspects presented. The circle is completed in a constant movement that emphasizes the importance of an understanding of childhood in an educational dimension for the readers and that also contemplates the values of the journey of Art

Tomando como lente de análise visões conjugadas da História com a Sociologia e os processos culturais, a discussão privilegia a relação das descobertas sobre o ser infantil, procura trazer um novo olhar acerca dos posicionamentos sobre a infância, considerando elementos da Arte e da Educação. As questões que nortearam a pesquisa foram: Qual seria o caminho percorrido pelo conceito de infância? Qual seria a trajetória da concepção de criança? Na sociedade dos séculos XX e XXI, existe uma concepção diferenciada desses elementos? Como as obras de Portinari podem servir de diálogo e apoio na discussão acerca da criança e da concepção de infância nos séculos XX e XXI? Há uma concepção de infância retratada nas obras de Candido Portinari? Que elementos contidos na produção e na vida do autor podem enriquecer a reflexão sobre a criança, a concepção de infância e a Educação? O movimento de estruturação dos capítulos assemelha-se ao da formação da ciranda e os avanços da discussão em busca de uma interlocução com as obras de Portinari, inicia-se com apresentação de concepções que prepararam o terreno das idéias segundo as visões de autores que enriqueceram o despertar necessário sobre a questão da infância, compondo uma verdadeira roda de olhares que guiaram a investigação. O primeiro passo rumo às pretensões de apresentar a concepção de infância da obra do artista escolhido e impulsionar o entendimento de imagens que encerrem uma mensagem particular acerca do campo artístico e educacional foi mostrar as premissas de Ariès e Heywood, cruzar a historiografia mundial sobre o ser infantil com a de outros autores, que ampliam a discussão especificamente no Brasil. Nessa discussão mereceram destaque as questões do sentimento de infância, da iconografia e dos cuidados devotados à criança nas famílias. O passo seguinte foi o de trazer a Sociologia da Prática de Bourdieu de modo a investigar como o viés sociológico é capaz de desnudar as ideologias que abarcam a discussão da infância e propor uma visão menos ingênua da estrutura social, essencialmente quando aponta nuances do campo artístico e da trajetória do artista Portinari. As acepções próprias da visão sociológica ganharam complemento no terceiro passo, que além de retomar o encontro com acontecimentos que inauguraram novos olhares para a questão infantil, contextualizaram a formação do pintor e do movimento que lançou as bases para uma nova compreensão da Arte: o Modernismo. O último passo, finalmente, apresenta o fechamento da proposta inicial, quando, por meio das imagens de oito obras do artista, das décadas de 1930, 1940, 1950 e 1960, duas de cada década, promove uma leitura sensível da obra, já que resgata as questões destacadas nos demais momentos da pesquisa e assume o compromisso de delinear o retrato da criança segundo os aspectos históricos, sociais e culturais apresentados.
