Resumo: The categorization of the time of birth (quartiles) is shown to be a factor which influences the development of a talent in soccer, which in its structure has the division of categories into age groups. The aim of the present study is to assess and identify the quartiles of birth in professional players at different levels: the Brazilian National Championship First Division (20 clubs), the Second Division (16 clubs) and Libertadores da America Cup (32 clubs). Data of 2,073 players were collected and analyzed using the chi-square test. Differences were found in the quartile as well as the birth semester in all the three competitive levels analyzed. It was therefore concluded that the quartile of birth is a factor that has an influence in player selection, both in Brazil and in South America.

La categorización de la época de nacimiento (cuartil), se muestra como una de las variables para el desarrollo de talentos en el fútbol, que posee en su estructura la división de clases en grupos, puesto que el objetivo de este estudio es evaluar y identificar los cuartiles del nacimiento de atletas profesionales en diferentes niveles: Campeonato Brasileño Serie A, B y La Copa Libertadores de a America. 2.073 jugadores de 20 clubes de la Serie A, Serie B 16 y 32 que compitieron en la Copa Libertadores de America en 2008, compusieron la muestra. Se utilizó el teste qui-cuadrado. Diferencias fueron encontradas en relación al cuartil y al semestre de nacimiento en los tres niveles competitivos analizados. Se constató que el cuartil es un factor que influye en la selección de jugadores en Brasil y América del Sur.A categorização da época de nascimento (quartil) tem se mostrado uma das variáveis para o desenvolvimento de talentos no futebol, que possui em sua estrutura a divisão das categorias em grupos etários, logo o objetivo deste estudo é avaliar e identificar os quartis de nascimento de atletas profissionais em diferentes níveis: Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, B e Copa Libertadores da América. 2073 jogadores de 20 clubes da Série A, 16 da Série B e 32 que disputaram a Copa Libertadores da América em 2008 compuseram a amostra. Utilizou-se o teste qui-quadradado. Diferenças foram encontradas em relação ao quartil e ao semestre de nascimento nos três níveis competitivos analisados.
