Resumo: This text is a critical review of the documentary “Pelé”, released by Netflix in February 2021. The work presents Pelé's football career between the 1958 and 1970 World Cups and, for that, shows the tensions surrounding the personage and the Brazilian political context. Based on these reflections and on his recurring comparison with Muhammad Ali, we ask: Why did Pelé take a non-combative position in relation to political issues of his time? Based on the civilizing process theory, we sought to respond in observance of the power relations, which placed Pelé as a member of the established society, and the social configuration that, formed by football / sport, State and people, and the governance of a regime authoritarian and violent, decreased the degrees of freedom for Pelé.

La obra presenta la carrera futbolística de Pelé entre los Mundiales de 1958 y 1970 y, para ello, muestra las tensiones que rodean al personaje y el contexto político brasileño. A partir de estas reflexiones y de su recurrente comparación con Muhammad Ali, preguntamos: ¿Por qué Pelé adoptó una postura no combativa en relación con los temas políticos de su época? A partir de la teoría del proceso civilizatorio, se intentó responder en cumplimiento de las relaciones de poder, que ubicaron a Pelé como miembro de la sociedad establecida, y la configuración social que, conformada por fútbol / deporte, Estado y pueblo, y el gobierno de un régimen autoritario y violento, disminuyó los grados de libertad para Pelé.Esse texto trata-se de resenha crítica do documentário “Pelé”, lançado pela Netflix em fevereiro de 2021. A obra apresenta a carreira futebolística de Pelé entre as Copas de 1958 e 1970 e, para isso, mostra as tensões em torno do personagem e do contexto político brasileiro. A partir dessas reflexões e da sua recorrente comparação com Muhammad Ali, perguntamos: Por que Pelé teve uma postura não combativa em relação a questões políticas de sua época?
