Resumo: The present paper intends to briefly provide a historical panorama of the public policies that shaped housing in Portugal and Brazil. In a sequential approach, it elaborates on the initial enterprises and actions towards housing issues, going through periods of dictatorship and re-democratization, until reaching current times of intensive financing in Portugal and the shift of housing policies in fostering the economy of Brazil. Subsequently, some general analyses and comparisons of these routes are introduced, dealing with the social impact of the considered policies.  Keywords: Social habitation. Housing Policy. Brazil. Portugal.Este artículo se propone realizar una breve revisión histórica de la evolución de las políticas públicas de vivienda en Portugal y Brasil. En un enfoque secuencial, discute las primeras preocupaciones y acciones relacionadas con la vivienda, pasando por períodos dictatoriales y de redemocratización, hasta períodos recientes, de fuerte financiarización en Portugal y la transformación de las políticas de vivienda para promover la economía en Brasil. Se trata de una investigación bibliográfica descriptiva, como parte de un estudio posdoctoral, con análisis comparativo de aspectos del tema en Brasil y Portugal. También se presentan algunos análisis generales y conclusiones sobre la importancia social de las políticas de vivienda estudiadas. Palabras clave: Vivienda social. Política de Vivienda. Brasil. Portugal.    O presente artigo propõe realizar um breve resgate histórico da evolução das políticas públicas de habitação em Portugal e no Brasil. Em uma abordagem sequencial,discorre sobre as primeiras preocupações e ações referentes às questões habitacionais nos países, passando por períodos ditatoriais e de redemocratização, até os períodos recentes, de forte financeirização em Portugal e com políticas habitacionais em grande escala e em fomento à economia no Brasil. Trata-se de pesquisa bibliográfica descritiva, como parte de estudo pós-doutoral, com análise comparativa sobre aspectos do tema no Brasil e em Portugal.
