Agribusiness and urbanization in the region Triângulo Mineiro (Brazil): “Sugarcane towns” and urban specificities under the effect of the sugar-energy sector

Resumo: This study evaluates the territorial aspects of the sugar-energy sector (i.e., producer of both sugarcane and derivatives) in small urban centers in the region named Triângulo Mineiro (west of the State of Minas Gerais). These urban centers correspond to the seats of municipalities which have experienced a significant expansion of planting and industrial production at the beginning of this century. These centers, referred to as “sugarcane towns” in this study, have become economically dependent on the sugar-energy sector. The lack of job alternatives has established a restricted routine for the local population, despite the public authorities’ interest in having this sector as a driving force for development. Esos espacios, que llamamos "ciudades de la caña de azúcar", se han vuelto económicamente dependientes de dicho sector, y la falta de empleo alternativo ha creado una vida cotidiana restringida para la población, aunque los poderes públicos apuesten por ese sector como motor de desarrollo. Estes espaços, a que estamos denominando como “cidades da cana”, tornam-se economicamente dependentes do setor sucroenergético e a falta de alternativas de trabalho cria um cotidiano restrito para a população, ainda que o poder público aposte na atividade como indutora de desenvolvimento.   Palavras-chave: Cana-de-açúcar.
