RACE, ETHNICITY AND NEGRITUDE: theoretical and conceptual contributions for ethnogeographical discussions

Resumo: This paper discusses the meanings attributed to the concepts of race, ethnicity and negritude in the scientific literature and cultural systems of common sense. The arguments in support of the debate rests on three main objectives, namely: identify the processes that shaped the race as a theoretical concept and as a category of difference that sets up social reality; analyze the possibilities and limitations of the concept of ethnicity; discuss the cultural politics involved in the development of the concept of negritude. Finally, the paper discusses the uses of the concepts of race, ethnicity and negritude to ethnogeographical debates and the construction of anti-essentialist geographies.

Il y a trois objectifs principaux qui soutiennent l'argument, à savoir: identifier les processus qui ont façonné la race comme un concept théorique et comme catégorie de la différence qui met en place la réalité sociale; analyser les possibilités et les limites du concept d?ethnie; discuter les politiques culturelles impliqués dans le développement du concept de la négritude. Enfin, l'article aborde l'utilisation des concepts de race, l'ethnie et la négritude dans les débats ethnogéographiques et dans la construction de géographies anti-essentialiste.O presente ensaio problematiza os significados atribuídos aos conceitos de raça, etnia e negritude pela literatura científica e pelos sistemas culturais de senso comum. A argumentação que sustenta o debate se assenta em três principais objetivos, a saber: identificar os processos que construíram raça como conceito teórico e como categoria da diferença instauradora da realidade social; analisar os alcances e as limitações do conceito de etnia; discutir as políticas culturais envolvidas na elaboração do conceito de negritude.
