QUALITY OF SOIL SURFACE LAYER UNDER FOREST, PASTURE AND CROPPED AREAS

Resumo: This study aimed to quantify physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of soil and to evaluate the quality of a red-yellow Argissol under natural vegetation and cultivated for pastures and crops. Soil samples (0-10 cm depth) were collected in the following environments: forest (I); pasture of Brachiaria brizantha established through maize intercropping (II); pasture of B. brizantha with ten years of use (III); maize monocropping under no-tillage system (IV); and pasture of B. Brizantha, estabilished after soybean monocropping under no-tillage system (V). The following traits were measured: physical (soil density, total porosity, geometric average aggregate diameter, gravimetric moisture, texture, water retention capacity, and flocculation level); chemical (pH in water, available P and K, residual P, Ca, Mg and Al, H+Al, organic carbon, base sum and saturation, CTC, Zn, and Cu); microbiological (microbial biomass carbon, basal respiration, microbial and metabolic quotient, and acid and alkaline phosphatase enzymes activity, and ?-glucosidase). In comparison with the reference system (I), the soil quality rank for the environments was V, II, IV and III (lowest quality for the exclusive pasture). Therefore, in environments with crop-livestock integration, the edaphic environment quality was better than in monocrops. According to the management process used, it was possible to bring soil quality near to the reference environment. KEY-WORDS: Crop-livestock integration; no-tillage; corn; soybean; sustainability.

KEY-WORDS: Crop-livestock integration; no-tillage; corn; soybean; sustainability.   Nesta pesquisa objetivou-se quantificar características físicas, químicas e biológicas, bem como a qualidade de um Argissolo vermelho-amarelo com vegetação natural e cultivado com pastagens e culturas. Foram coletadas amostras de solo, na profundidade de 0 a 10 cm, nos seguintes ambientes: mata nativa (I); pastagem de Brachiaria brizantha, formada pelo consórcio com milho (II); pastagem de B. brizantha com dez anos de uso (III); área cultivada com milho em plantio direto (IV); e área de pastagem de B. brizantha, formada após o cultivo de soja em plantio direto (V). As seguintes características foram avaliadas: físicas (densidade do solo, porosidade total, diâmetro médio geométrico de agregados, umidade gravimétrica, textura, capacidade de retenção de água e o grau de floculação); químicas (pH em água, P e K disponíveis, P-remanescente, Ca, Mg e Al, H+Al, carbono orgânico, soma e saturação por bases, CTC, Zn e Cu); e microbiológicas (carbono da biomassa microbiana, respiração basal, quociente microbiano e metabólico e atividade das enzimas fosfatases ácida e alcalina e ?-glicosidade). Comparado ao sistema de referência (I), o ordenamento dos ambientes para a qualidade de solo foi V, II, IV e III, sendo a pastagem exclusiva o ambiente de pior qualidade. Logo, onde houve interação entre agricultura e cultivo forrageiro, a qualidade do ambiente edáfico foi superior ao de monocultivo, quer seja com milho ou pastagem exclusiva. E, conforme o manejo, essa qualidade pode se aproximar do ambiente de referência.
