Resumo: | The objective of this research was to identify sources of maize germplasm (hybrid and open pollination bred populations, ancient and local) efficient in absorption and utilization of itrogen for seed production at Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The trials were carried out at Viçosa, Minas Gerais State (altitude 650 m, 20º45'20" S), during 2001/2002 growing season. To simulate environments with average and severe nitrogen stress, 20 kg ha-1 and 120 kg ha-1 doses on top dressing, espectively, were used. The data traits evaluated were submitted to analysis of variance and cultivar means were grouped by Scott-Knott test. The interactions of germoplasm types with nitrogen doses were not significant (p > 0.05). The highest seed yield and ear weight cultivars were the bred populations UFVM3, AL25, and BR106, the hybrids AG122 and BR 201, and the local populations B3, B11, B12, B6, B9, and B22. The environment with the largest nitrogen level presented the highest seed yield, ear weight, plant and ear height, and number of ears by plant. KEY-WORDS: Zea mays; breeding; N stress. |
