Resumo: | The anileira (Indigofera suffruticosa) is a small tropical shrub that produces excellent quality indigo. It presents, among other properties, antispamodic, sedative, antipyretic, diuretic, laxative, insect repellency, and odontologic activity. Preliminary essays showed less than 1% germination rate, which was attributed to tegument impermeability since soaking did not occur. Anileira seeds were collected at the Alternative Medical Hospital, in Goiania, Brazil, in October 2000, shadow dried and subject to the following treatments: boiling water for 30, 60, 90 and 120 seconds, and sulfuric acid p.a. for 10, 15, 20, and 25 minutes. Acid treated seeds were then washed in running water for 10 minutes. Samples were drawn from each treatment (four 50-seeds replications) wich was subject to the standard germination test. Counting was performed twice a week for 40 days. Four replications were used in a completely randomized design. Statistical analysis showed treatment effects in distinct groups. The treatments with boiling water did not show significant differences, together forming the intermediate group. The sulfuric acid treatments did not show differences also, but were largely superior to those with boiling water. The control showed the lowest germination rate. KEY-WORDS: Indigofera; seeds; dormency. |

KEY-WORDS: Indigofera; seeds; dormency.
