Language, literature and society : a sociolinguistic analysis of Brazilian modernism

Resumo: This paper aims to analyze, from the sociolinguistic point of view, the conception of national language that makes up the literary project of Brazilian Modernism. This analysis uses theoretical contributions particularly from Sociolinguistics: Monteiro (2000), Gnerre (1991), Bagno (1999), Tarallo (1994). Theoretical frameworks  from  literary  sociology  were  also  used,  especially  the  book  of Eduardo  Portella  (1971),  important  researcher  of  the  Brazilian  modernist literature. It could be observed that the concept of national literature built by Brazilian modernism rests on the idea of a national language designed in close relationship with the Brazilian orality.

It could be observed that the concept of national literature built by Brazilian modernism rests on the idea of a national language designed in close relationship with the Brazilian orality.Este artigo tem o objetivo de analisar, do ponto de vista sociolinguístico, a concepção de língua nacional que compõe o projeto literário do Modernismo brasileiro.  Para  essa  análise,  foram  utilizados  aportes  teóricos  provenientes especialmente  da  Sociolinguística:  Monteiro  (2000),  Gnerre  (1991),  Bagno (1999), Tarallo (1994). Também foram utilizados referenciais teóricos oriundos do campo da sociologia literária, especialmente a obra de Eduardo Portella (1971), importante estudioso da literatura modernista brasileira.
