Resumo: The main political unrests occurring in Brazil in the late 19 th  Century are in the center of the actions of “Ismália Caré” episode, in the trilogy O tempo e o vento, written by Erico Verissimo. In Santa Fé, the characters actively participate in campaigns for the slavery abolition and the establishment of the Republic. In this context, the Cambará family founded the newspaper “O Democrata” to advertise their ideals and also to receive orientations of the Republican doctrine by texts of “A Federação”. This research aims to analyse the literary representation of those historic facts and aims to show how the reading and production of newspapers are related to the ideological formation of the characters and the narrative configuration.

En Santa Fé, los personajes están involucrados activamente en campañas para la abolición de la esclavitud y el establecimiento de la República. En este contexto, la familia Cambará fundó el periódico “O Democrata” para anunciar sus ideales y, también, recibe orientaciones de la doctrina republicana por los textos del periódico “A Federação”. En este ensayo  se analiza la representación literaria de los acontecimientos históricos y trata de mostrar cómo la lectura y la producción de periódicos están relacionadas a la formación ideológica de los personajes y la configuración de la narrativa.As principais agitações políticas que ocorrem no Brasil no final do século XIX estão no centro das ações do episódio “Ismália Caré”, na trilogia O tempo e o vento, de Erico Verissimo. Em Santa Fé, as personagens participam ativamente das campanhas pela abolição dos escravos e a implantação da República. Nesse contexto, a família Cambará funda o jornal “O Democrata” para fazer propaganda de seus ideais e, somado a isso, recebe orientações da doutrina republicana pelos textos do jornal “A Federação”.
