Regionality and identity in the hinterland of Outros cantos, by Maria Valéria Rezende: an “out of place” experience

Resumo: This article analyzes how the regionalist literary tradition is present in the novel Outros cantos (2016), by Maria Valéria Rezende, based on the representation of the space and the identity. It also investigates how literary criticism has discussed the presence of regionalism in contemporaneity and how such discussion reflects on the author’s adherence or refusal to being associated to regionalism. The article concludes that there are resonances of the regionalist tradition in Rezende’s work, although the author rejects the qualification of regionalist and any relation between her work and this literary strand.

El artículo examina también cómo la crítica literaria ha discutido la presencia del regionalismo en la contemporaneidad y cómo tal discusión se refleja en la adhesión o rechazo de la autora al regionalismo. El trabajo concluye que hay resonancias de la tradición regionalista en el texto de Rezende, aunque la autora rechace la calificación de regionalista y cualquier relación entre su obra y esta corriente literaria.Este trabalho analisa como a tradição literária regionalista manifesta-se no romance Outros cantos (2016), de Maria Valéria Rezende, com base na representação do espaço e da identidade. Examina-se, ainda, como a crítica literária tem discutido a presença do regionalismo na contemporaneidade e como tal discussão reflete na adesão ou recusa da autora à vertente regionalista.
