Cohesive and semantic-pragmatic properties of the complex connector por isso in contemporary Brazilian Portuguese

Resumo: In this paper, we describe the cohesive and semanticpragmatic properties of the complex connector por isso in contemporary Brazilian Portuguese. To reach this goal, we analyzed 100 tokens from the Portuguese Corpus (Now Database) applying the theoretical assumptions of Usage-Based Linguistics and Text Linguistics. Our results indicate that this connector shows three specific aspects that are not present in grammar textbooks: i) it assumes three different semantic values in the domain of causality; ii) it has cohesive properties, both sequential and referential; iii) it articulates clauses, periods, and paragraphs, with differences regarding the cross-reference scope at these three levels.

Nuestros resultados indican que este conector tiene tres aspectos particulares ausentes en las gramáticas: i) asume tres valores semánticos diferentes en el dominio de la causalidad; ii) tiene propiedades cohesivas secuenciales y referenciales; iii) articula cláusulas, periodos y párrafos, con diferencias en cuanto al alcance de la referencia en estos tres niveles.Neste artigo, descrevemos as propriedades coesivas e semântico-pragmáticas do conector complexo por isso no português brasileiro contemporâneo. Para esse fim, analisamos 100 dados de uso do Corpus do Português (base Now) à luz dos pressupostos teóricos da Linguística Funcional Centrada no Uso e da Linguística Textual.
