Cinematic landscapes, spatial discourses and travel: Geography and Tourism in “Backpackers”

Resumo: The relationship Geography-Cinema is old and has different ways of building. Among them is the interpretation of geographic discourses in films. In fact, investigating imaginaries and discourses about spaces has been a task for geographers. Similarly, the travels are also a geographic concern. Travel films, then, are an opportunity for geographical reflection, because they reveal ways of seeing the world and break the material-symbolic dichotomy. In view of this, the article aims to interpret the geographic discourses present in the film Backpackers (2022), recorded in Peru. For this, in addition to a bibliographic review on the relationships between Geography, Tourism and Cinema, the article uses the Maria Helena Costa’s analysis of filmic elements, interpreting intertextuality, location, narrative structure and filmic landscape. It is concluded that the geographic discourses present Peru based on stereotypes and with a touristic and Eurocentric perspective.

Entre esas formas se encuentra la interpretación de los discursos geográficos en las películas. De hecho, investigar imaginarios y discursos sobre los espacios ha sido tarea de los geógrafos. Del mismo modo, viajar es también una preocupación geográfica. Las películas de viajes, entonces, son una oportunidad para la reflexión geográfica, ya que revelan formas de ver el mundo y rompen la dicotomía material-simbólica. Ante ello, el artículo tiene como objetivo interpretar los discursos geográficos presentes en la película Hasta que volvamos a nos encontrar (2022), grabada en Perú. Para eso, además de una revisión bibliográfica sobre las relaciones entre Geografía, Turismo y Cine, el artículo utiliza el análisis de elementos fílmicos de Maria Helena Costa, interpretando la intertextualidad, la ubicación, la estructura narrativa y el paisaje fílmico. Se concluye que los discursos geográficos presentan al Perú a partir de estereotipos y con una perspectiva turística y eurocéntrica.A relação Geografia-Cinema é antiga e tem diversos modos de se construir. Entre eles, está a interpretação de discursos geográficos em filmes. De fato, investigar os imaginários e discursos sobre os espaços tem sido uma tarefa dos geógrafos. De igual modo, as viagens também são preocupação geográfica. Os filmes de viagem, então, são uma oportunidade de reflexão geográfica, posto que revelam maneiras de ver o mundo e rompem a dicotomia material-simbólico. Diante disso, o artigo objetiva interpretar os discursos geográficos presentes no filme “Até a próxima vez” (2022), gravado no Peru. Para isso, além de uma revisão bibliográfica sobre as relações entre Geografia, Turismo e Cinema, o artigo usa a análise dos elementos fílmicos de Maria Helena Costa (2013), interpretando a intertextualidade, a locação, estrutura narrativa e a paisagem fílmica.
