Resumo: The objective was to understand the relationship between the physical and anthropic environment, to analyze the level of social vulnerability and the changes on the physical aspects in the low course of the Poti River (Piauí-Brazil). The Municipal Social Vulnerability Index (IMVS) was elaborated, based on the factor analysis by main components by census sector, using the software SPSS and ArcMap 10.2. It was found that the rural area has high to very high IMVS due to the low demographic density, reduced infrastructure, low income, the low level of education and the greater aging of the population, considering that most of them are economically active. in urban areas. As for the natural aspects, it was found that the vegetation has a strong influence on the conservation of the environment, that its removal, in an inadequate way, causes negative impacts on the environment and, consequently, on the population. Thus, knowledge about social vulnerability in a river basin allows government officials to integrate preventive policies and measures in the planning and strategies of sustainable development in urban and rural areas.

Se elaboró el Índice de Vulnerabilidad Social Municipal (IMVS), con base en el análisis factorial por componentes principales por sector censal, utilizando el software SPSS y ArcMap 10.2. Se encontró que el área rural tiene IMVS de alta a muy alta debido a la baja densidad demográfica, la reducida infraestructura, los bajos ingresos, el bajo nivel de educación y el mayor envejecimiento de la población, considerando que la mayoría de ellos son económicamente activos. áreas. En cuanto a los aspectos naturales, se encontró que la vegetación tiene una fuerte influencia en la conservación del medio ambiente, que su remoción, de manera inadecuada, provoca impactos negativos en el medio ambiente y, en consecuencia, en la población. Objetivou-se avaliar o nível de vulnerabilidade social e as alterações sobre os recursos naturais na área do baixo curso do rio Poti (Piauí-Brasil). Foi elaborado o Índice Municipal de Vulnerabilidade Social (IMVS), com base na análise fatorial por componentes principais por setor censitário, utilizando os softwares SPSS e ArcMap 10.2. Constatou-se que a área rural apresenta IMVS de alto a muito alto, devido à baixa densidade demográfica, reduzida infraestrutura, do baixo poder econômico, do reduzido nível de escolaridade e do maior envelhecimento da população, tendo em vista que sua maior parte economicamente ativa encontra-se nas áreas urbanas. Quanto aos aspectos naturais, verificou-se que a vegetação tem forte influência na preservação do ambiente, que a sua retirada, de forma inadequada, provoca impactos negativos ao meio ambiente e consequentemente, sobre a população.
