Absent Vermelhense party: identity aspects of a popular celebration in Minas Gerais state

This article analyzed the Absent Vermelhense Party, held since the 1950s, in terms of historical, cultural and identity. Historical information about the party was collected and interviews were conducted with natives from Vermelho Novo (MG). Methodologically, document analysis and narrative research were used. The results show that the celebration emerged as a tradition of religious expression, aimed at reuniting native citizens who weren’t in the municipality anymore. Over time, the party increased its public reach and went through a process of spectacularization in which the population has stopped organizing it and it has been appropriated by the municipal administration instead. In this regard, the party was transformed, with renowned artists and changes in programming.
