Gifts to the conquerors: sesmarias at the southern frontier of the captaincy of Espírito Santo

Resumo: This article discusses the land elite of the southern border of the captaincy of Espírito Santo. Documents from the Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino (AHU) and from Arquivo Nacional do Rio de Janeiro (ANRJ) were gathered in a corpus of allotments. The analysis aimed to characterize the process of obtaining allotments and relate it to the occupation of the southern region of the captaincy of Espírito Santo. The search for sources was characterized using the terms “Guarapari”, “Guaraparim”, “Itapemirim”, “Itapemiry” to locate the land letters in the archives. Then, the letters were read, and the reasons given by the land elites were identified for obtaining the title, the characteristics of the claimed possession and the testimonies listed.

Se reunieron documentos del Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino (AHU) y del Arquivo Nacional do Rio de Janeiro (ANRJ) en un corpus documental. El análisis tuvo como objetivo caracterizar el proceso de obtención de sesmarias y relacionarlo con la ocupación de la región sur de la capitanía de Espírito Santo. La búsqueda de fuentes se caracterizó por el uso de los términos "Guarapari", "Guaraparim", "Itapemirim", "Itapemiry" para localizar las cartas de sesmarias en los archivos. Seguidamente, se leyeron las cartas y se identificaron las justificaciones de los sesmeiros para la obtención del título, las características de la posesión reivindicada y los testimonios enumerados.Neste artigo, discute-se a formação de uma elite sesmeira da fronteira sul da antiga capitania do Espírito Santo. Reuniram-se documentos do Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino (AHU) e Arquivo Nacional do Rio de Janeiro (ANRJ) em um corpus documental. A análise objetivou caracterizar o processo de obtenção de sesmarias e relacioná-lo à ocupação da região sul da capitania do Espírito Santo. A busca pelas fontes caracterizou-se pelo emprego dos termos “Guarapari”, “Guaraparim”, “Itapemirim”, “Itapemiry” para a localização das cartas de sesmarias nos arquivos.
