The Phenomenon of Religious Tourism at the Sanctuary of Senhor Bom Jesus de Matosinhos in Congonhas (MG)

Resumo: The Sanctuary of Senhor Bom Jesus de Matosinhos in Congonhas (MG) hosts an architectural and sculptural complex of undeniable artistic and cultural value, however, the site differs from other religious heritage sites in that while these sites usually attract a large public due to their historical and artistic value, the Sanctuary has a significant amount of religious tourism which makes it one of the largest pilgrimage sites in the country. Within this perspective, the study attempts to understand the factors that justify this phenomenon, performing an analysis of the Sanctuary, that takes into account its material and symbolic universe, as well as data on tourist visitation at the location. The research points out that the large influx of religious tourism is a result of the secular celebration of the Jubilee of the Bom Jesus de Matosinhos that takes place in the vicinity of the Sanctuary, however, it is concluded that the real element responsible for this phenomenon lies in the junction between the material and the intangible, in the field of practices and cultural exchanges that are provided by the festival, which in turn is conditioned to the materiality of the Sanctuary.

Dentro de esta perspectiva, el estudio trata de comprender los factores que justifican este fenómeno, realizando un análisis del Santuario, que tenga en cuenta su universo material y simbólico, además de los datos sobre las visitas turísticas al lugar. La investigación señala que la gran afluencia de turismo religioso es resultado de la celebración secular del Jubileo del Bom Jesus de Matosinhos que tiene lugar en las inmediaciones del Santuario, sin embargo, se concluye que el verdadero elemento responsable de este fenómeno se encuentra en la unión entre lo material y lo intangible, en el ámbito de las prácticas e intercambios culturales que proporciona la fiesta, que a su vez está condicionada a la materialidad del Santuario.O Santuário do Senhor Bom Jesus de Matosinhos em Congonhas (MG) abriga um conjunto arquitetônico e escultórico de incontestável valor artístico e cultural, entretanto, o sítio se distingue de outros patrimônios de natureza religiosa pois enquanto esses locais normalmente atraem grande público em decorrência de seu valor histórico e artístico, o Santuário apresenta um expressivo turismo religioso que faz dele um dos maiores locais de peregrinação do país. Dentro desta perspectiva, o estudo busca compreender os fatores que justificam esse fenômeno realizando uma análise do Santuário, que leva em conta seu universo material e simbólico além de dados da visitação turística no local.
