The Real Implications and Effects of Covid19 in the Tourism Industry: what is the future of tourism in a world without tourists?

Resumo: Although scholars have been particularly fascinated by the effects of covid19, no less true seems to be that we know little about its evolution and practical effects in the tourism industry. What is more important, the real implications of the pandemic in the global economy, as well as tourism, are uncertain (Romagosa, 2020; Korstanje 2020). In the mid of this mayhem, some voices have alerted on the opportunities of COVID19 to re-found the epistemological borders of tourism research (Wen et al 2020; Rogerson & Baum, 2020) while others called their attention to the problems of an ecological crisis precipitated by the capitalist system (Gossling, Scott & Hall, 2020; Prayag, 2020; Higgins-Desbiolles, 2020). The economic-based theory, which over years monopolized knowledge production and distribution in the academic tribes, failed not only to give a precise definition of tourism but to consolidate the discipline as a serious option. Based on the needs of protecting businesses or the organic image of the destination, this theory emphasized the figure the tourist as the only source of valid information. Still further, the economic-based paradigm has invariably led the discipline towards an unparalleled crisis, as some scholars adhere (Tribe, Dann & Jamal, 2015; Tribe 1997; 2010). As Adrian Franklin (2007) puts it, “tourist-centricity” exhibits a restrictive viewpoint of tourism which is limited to a managerial perspective based on the tourist as the only agent of the system. As a result of this, other actors and voices are pushed away to peripheral places. To some extent, COVID19, so far, shows the impossibility to make applied research in a world without tourists. Having said this, the present issue explores not only the limitation of the current tourism theory –and research- but also the opportunities and challenges posed on the industry in the years to come.

Y lo que es más importante, las implicaciones reales de la pandemia en la economía mundial, así como en el turismo, son inciertas (Romagosa, 2020; Korstanje 2020). En medio de este caos, algunas voces han alertado sobre las oportunidades de la COVID19 para refundar las fronteras epistemológicas de la investigación turística (Wen et al 2020; Rogerson & Baum, 2020), mientras que otras han llamado la atención sobre los problemas de una crisis ecológica precipitada por el sistema capitalista (Gossling, Scott & Hall, 2020; Prayag, 2020; Higgins-Desbiolles, 2020). La teoría de base económica, que durante años monopolizó la producción y distribución del conocimiento en las tribus académicas, no sólo no logró dar una definición precisa del turismo, sino consolidar la disciplina como una opción seria. Basada en las necesidades de protección de las empresas o de la imagen orgánica del destino, esta teoría enfatizó la figura del turista como única fuente de información válida. Aún más, el paradigma de base económica ha llevado invariablemente a la disciplina hacia una crisis sin parangón, como adhieren algunos estudiosos (Tribe, Dann & Jamal, 2015; Tribe 1997; 2010). Como consecuencia de ello, los demás actores y voces quedan relegados a lugares periféricos. Hasta cierto punto, COVID19 muestra la imposibilidad de realizar investigación aplicada en un mundo sin turistas. Dicho esto, el presente número explora no sólo la limitación de la teoría -y la investigación- actual del turismo, sino también las oportunidades y los retos que se plantean al sector en los próximos años.Embora os estudiosos tenham ficado particularmente fascinados com os efeitos da covid19 , não menos verdade parece ser que sabemos pouco sobre sua evolução e efeitos práticos na indústria do turismo. Mais importante ainda, as reais implicações da pandemia na economia global, assim como o turismo, são incertas (Romagosa, 2020; Korstanje 2020). Em meio a esta confusão, algumas vozes alertaram sobre as oportunidades da COVID19 de refundar as fronteiras epistemológicas da pesquisa turística (Wen et al 2020; Rogerson & Baum, 2020) enquanto outras chamaram sua atenção para os problemas de uma crise ecológica precipitada pelo sistema capitalista (Gossling, Scott & Hall, 2020; Prayag, 2020; Higgins-Desbiolles, 2020). A teoria de base econômica, que durante anos monopolizou a produção e distribuição do conhecimento nas tribos acadêmicas, não só falhou em dar uma definição precisa de turismo, mas em consolidar a disciplina como uma opção séria. Com base na necessidade de proteger as empresas ou a imagem orgânica do destino, esta teoria enfatizou a figura do turista como única fonte de informação válida. Ainda mais, o paradigma econômico tem invariavelmente conduzido a disciplina a uma crise sem paralelo, como alguns estudiosos aderem (Tribe, Dann & Jamal, 2015; Tribe 1997; 2010). Como diz Adrian Franklin (2007), a "centralidade turística" exibe um ponto de vista restritivo do turismo que se limita a uma perspectiva gerencial baseada no turista como o único agente do sistema. Como resultado disso, outros atores e vozes são empurrados para lugares periféricos. Até certo ponto, a COVID19, até o momento, mostra a impossibilidade de fazer pesquisa aplicada em um mundo sem turistas.
