Permanent People’s Tribunal – an analysis of the “Mexico Chapter” and its legacy for the International Human Rights System

Resumo: This present study intends to analyze the work performed by the Permanent People’s Tribunal, specifically its Mexico Chapter, which addresses the impacts of free trade market in Mexican people’s life. This work is developed from Professor Zubizarreta’s perspective, analyzing documents from TPP itself. The conclusion is that there is a process of privileging private interests to the detriment of communities’ rights. The Tribunal’s recommendations to try to make amends to the situation are described. After the case study and its results, the aim is to advocate that, due to the great significance of the verdict content, it should be considered as an example of International law made in a bottom-up perspective, which is its main legacy.

A sessão escolhida para a análise foi o “Capítulo México”, que julga os impactos do livre comércio na vida do povo mexicano. O trabalho se desenvolve sob a perspectiva do professor Juan Zubizarreta, sendo feita a análise de documentos do próprio TPP. O que se conclui é a existência de um processo de satisfação dos interesses privados em detrimento dos direitos das comunidades. Apontam-se as recomendações do Tribunal para que a situação comece a ser melhorada.
