Resumo: The consumption of tobacco causes 4.9 millions deaths in the world. The workers are susceptible to diseases caused by tobacco as they pass a great part of their time working. In this study, our aim was to evaluate the prevalence of smokers among the professionals from the University Hospital /Center of Attention to Health of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (HU/CAS-UFJF), analyzing their dependence to the nicotine and their knowledge about this matter. Method: A 21-item questionnaire was applied to a sample of 266 professionals from HU/CAS-UFJF, It evidenced that 16.5% are smokers, being their major composed by a low school degree; 84% had tried to stop smoking more than once, 41% use cigarettes in the workstation; all the smokers agree with the laws that forbid smoking in closed environment; one third of the interviewed ones is exposed to the ambient pollution from cigarettes; 96% of the smokers know the consequences of tobacco. Conclusion: It was high the level of HU/CAS-UFJF professionals who smokes in the workstation So it is necessary to strengthen the implementation and fulfillments of politics against tobacco in the workstations in order to benefit their health.Keywords: frequency. smoking. hospital.

Os trabalhadores são suscetíveis aos malefícios do tabaco, pois passam grande parte do seu tempo no ambiente de trabalho. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a prevalência do tabagismo entre os funcionários do Hospital Universitário (HU)/Centro de Atenção à Saúde (CAS) da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF), o grau de dependência dos fumantes e o conhecimento quanto aos riscos do tabagismo. Método: estudo descritivo com aplicação de um questionário composto de 21 questões objetivas e discursivas utilizando um amostra aleatória composta por 266 profissionais do HU/CAS – UFJF. Resultados: 16,5% são fumantes; sendo a maioria composta por profissionais sem nível superior de escolaridade, 84% realizaram de uma a várias tentativas para abandonar o tabagismo; 41% fazem uso do tabaco no local de trabalho; todos os fumantes são favoráveis às leis que proíbem fumar em ambiente fechado; quase 1/3 dos entrevistados está exposto à poluição tabagística ambiental; 96% dos tabagistas estão cientes dos malefícios causados pelo cigarro. Conclusões: é alto o número de profissionais do HU/CAS-UFJF que fazem uso do cigarro no ambiente de trabalho.
