Resumo: | Introduction: Aloe is a plant rich in polysaccharides, the main one being Acemannan, widely used for its medicinal properties, which allows several clinical applications in the most varied areas. Although the use in Dentistry is poorly documented in the literature, the benefits of its pharmacological application to the healing of oral tissues are observed. Objective: To review systematically the existing studies on the efficacy and safety of Aloe Vera in tissue repair and healing of dental surgical wounds. Methods: Literature searches were carried out to identify all relevant articles published in the MEDLINE (PubMed), SciELO, Cochrane Library and Virtual Health Library databases, using the keywords: “acemannan”, “aloe”, “dentistry” . Clinical trials published in English and Portuguese up to the year 2021, available in full text, were included. Results: Six studies met the inclusion criteria. Out of these studies, three of them analyzed the effect of Aloe Vera in sockets after tooth extraction, while the others evaluated its benefits, respectively, in palatal puncture biopsy wounds, furcation defects and bone defects from apical surgeries. Most studies showed statistically significant results regarding the expression of healing factors and bone growth, and all of them showed positive outcomes. Conclusion: From clinical, radiographic and histopathological analyses, a healing and osteoinductive effect of acemannan was observed in the samples, allowing an early regeneration of tissues and oral wounds. Considering the results obtained and its properties, Aloe Vera proved efficiency and biocompatibility to be used as a complementary therapy to aid in the healing of surgical dental wounds. |
