Regeneration of peripheral nerve by using coaptation with fibrin glue

Many advances in the last decades have attempted to obtain a repair technique for lesions of peripheral nerves that results in better functional recovery of the structures innervated of such nerves. The main objective of this work is to compare the effectiveness of the coaptation with fibrin glue, derived from snake poison, in the repair of the peroneal nerve. Ten Wistar rats had their left peroneal nerve sectioned and repaired immediately with the glue, the right nerve serving as control. After ten weeks the peroneal nerve was collected for morphological analysis. In the nerves that were repaired with the glue, there were myelinated and unmyelinated regenerated nerve fibers, with a great amount of conjunctive tissue in the extracellular space. The nerve coaptation by the use of fibrin glue regenerated the lesion in the peroneal nerve, however the morphological pattern of the regeneration was compared to the peroneal nerve without lesion.
