Resumo: | Introduction: Suicide is a serious worldwide public health problem and is the second leading cause of death among young people aged 15 to 29 years. Although suicide needs special attention from health professionals who provide care to those who have undergone this experience, it is evident that negative attitudes such as discrimination, discredit and prejudice on the part of these professionals can negatively influence the care provided to people who attempted suicide. Objective: To analyze the perception of first-year nursing students from a private institution in the Federal District, Brazil about the suicidal person. Material and Methods: This was a quantitative, descriptive research carried out between October and November 2019. A sociodemographic and academic questionnaire and the Questionnaire on Suicidal Behavior (QUACS) were used. Results: 80 students participated, most of them female (85%), between 18 and 20 years old (77.5%), self-declared white (50%), single (97.5%), without children (93.75%), financially dependent on their parents (81.25%), with a family income above 4 minimum wages (38.75%) and night shift students (55%). Regarding the QUACS, it was found that students had low negative feelings towards the suicidal person, low perception of their professional capacity to deal with suicide and attributed to God the right to take someone's life. Conclusion: In general, students did not show negative attitudes towards the suicidal patient, they were able to identify signs of suicidal ideation, however they felt unable to provide assistance to these people. In addition, moralistic and condemnatory attitudes towards a person's right to commit suicide and a strong correlation between life and the divine gift were evidenced. |
