Resumo: Introduction: Health professionals are subjected to a series of occupational hazards in their work environment, including accidents with biological material, which are associated with the transmission of several infectious diseases, such as hepatitis B. The knowledge about the importance of vaccination and the adoption of universal biosafety measures are fundamental tools to prevent the disease. Objective: To identify the vaccination status and exposure to material potentially infected in Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora. Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive exploratory cross-sectional study (n=132 professionals). Standardized questionnaires were applied, together with the free and clarified consent term in two ways. Results: One hundred and twenty professors (90.9%) received vaccination against hepatitis B, of which seven (5.8%) only took one dose, nineteen (15.8%) took two doses and ninety four (78.3%) received the three necessary doses. From those who took the three doses, sixty three (67%) intervieweds performed the Anti-HBS test to make sure of the vaccine response. Eighty nine (67.4%) have already been exposed to potentially infected material at some time in their lives. Seventy four (83.1%) professionals reported having taken appropriate measures to prevent infection by possible pathogens. Seventy two (54.5%) reported to be exposed to contaminated material or at risk of hepatitis B infection in a frequent manner, twenty-one (29.2%) daily, thirty five (48.6%) weekly and sixteen (22.2%) alleged to have contact with this type of material monthly. Conclusion: With the present study, it was possible to emphasize the importance of the knowledge of the risk of infection in clarifying the benefits of hepatitis B vaccination.
