Summary: O presente trabalho tem como objetivo abordar a tradição oral africana por meio dos contos, especificamente três narrativas provenientes da região da África do Oeste. A escolha do gênero - conto‖ para legitimar a identidade africana deve-se ao fato de a literatura ser de forte relevância para construir, pelo simbolismo, representações culturais para o público infanto-juvenil. O conto é uma narrativa capaz de transcender o tempo e o espaço real, sem, no entanto, deixar de contribuir para a compreensão de questões internas ou externas ao ser humano. Ao falar da tradição oral africana, faz-se necessário abordar sobre os agentes responsáveis pela manutenção dessa tradição, que são os Griots.

The choice of the "tale" genre - to legitimize African identity - is due to the fact of the great relevance literature has, building through the symbolism, cultural representations to the Child-juvenile public. The tale is a powerful and capable narrative that transcending time and real space, less, however, failing to contribute the understanding of internal or external issues to the human being.
