Umberto Eco contributions to the fabric of a thesis in human sciences: lessons about present research

The work consists of reading notes of the book Como se faz a thesis em Ciências Humanas, by Umberto Eco. The book studied is a translation by Ana Falcão and Luís Leitão, 14th Edition, in São Paulo, by publisher Perspectiva, in 2007. The question that guided the study was: How should we proceed in order to write a doctoral thesis? With this, the objective is to analyze the book, in order to present the lessons explained by the author, with regard to the construction of the thesis in the area of ​​Human Sciences. Regarding the methodology adopted, it follows the propositions of a qualitative approach and highlights the preparation of reading notes that emerged from the discussions and interpretations occasioned by the analysis of the work. As a result, we infer that, although the book was published in 1980, it presents guidelines that are still in force, in the context of writing a doctoral thesis, since the beginning/guiding thread of this academic production occurs through the formulation of a asks a finite number of moves. Thus, the most obvious lesson is that the researcher must be enchanted by the thesis, so that its primary construction can branch into secondary sources, for new later productions, such as articles and books.
