Resumo: The aim of this article is to analyse the peculiarities of job generation for men and women of the Platô de Neópolis Irrigation Business Project, located in the Lower São Francisco region of Sergipe The main conclusion is that the irrigation policy substantially influenced the restructuring of the local labour market, in spite of the disparity between the number of jobs predicted and generated, with the predominance of registered work contracts going to young men and the almost complete exclusion of women from salaried occupations in modern agriculture.
