Resumo: This paper aims to compare the works of Alberdi and Sarmiento – two of the main authors in the Argentinean political thought of the XIX century. We focus on themes such as immigration and the process of formation of the Argentinean nation and its people, in the context of its adjustment to a model of civilization. Tough there are differences in the approaches of each of the authors regarding the concept of civilization, both consider the European immigration as a fundamental instrument to the development of an civilized Argentina in the XIX century – what meant, in part, the destruction and/or the incorporation of the local cultures.
