Resumo: This study was conducted in three joineries on the South of Espírito Santo State, to analyze the weight lifted by workers during joineries operations and to compare it with the weight limits recommended by National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The moving of timber pieces was done manually. Data on weight handling were obtained by an accuracy scale. The vertical and horizontal distances between load and body, the asymmetric angles and vertical displacements were obtained by direct measurement. The lifting frequencies were analyzed throughout studies of time and movement, using a time series analysis and handling difficult of evaluated loads through flow. According to the results, the highest load handling by workers were in the cutter and buzzy saw machines, and was above the recommended weight limits, rendering this way of work inadequate to man.

According to the results, the highest load handling by workers were in the cutter and buzzy saw machines, and was above the recommended weight limits, rendering this way of work inadequate to man.Realizou-se, o presente trabalho em três empresas no sul do Estado do Espírito Santo, com o objetivo de analisar os pesos manuseados por trabalhadores em operações de marcenarias e compará-los com os limites recomendados de pesos estabelecidos pelo Instituto Nacional de Segurança e Saúde Ocupacional dos Estados Unidos (NIOSH). Toda a movimentação das peças de madeira era realizada manualmente. Os valores dos pesos manuseados foram obtidos com uma balança de precisão. As distâncias horizontais e verticais da carga ao corpo, os ângulos de assimetria e os deslocamentos verticais foram obtidos por medições diretas. As freqüências de levantamentos foram analisadas por meio de estudos de tempos e movimentos, utilizando-se o método de tempos contínuos e as dificuldades de manuseio da carga avaliadas por meio de fluxograma.
