“Patrimônio vivo, tombado, mas não caído”: uma etnografia sobre casa, política e cuidado no Centro Histórico de São Luís/MA

This dissertation deals with conceptions and practices related to housing in the Historic Center of São Luís (Maranhão), especially in the neighborhoods of Praia Grande, Desterro, and Portinho, an area recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1997. Throughout this scientific research, it was observed how relationships are mobilized by the people who inhabit the central area, as well as the connections between the struggle for housing and revitalization policies that impact the dynamics of space occupation. These connections, therefore, indicate the meanings of home, housing insecurities, and perspectives on life experiences in the urban context. They also highlight the multiplicity of individuals, the circulation of objects and knowledge, and conflicts. Additionally, they help understand how people mobilize politics from their everyday lives in their relationships with the state. Finally, it is concluded that heritage is maintained and updated through practical activities carried out by the residents of the area.
