Resumo: | This work is an article opinion derived from the review process of a paper that uses a three-tier test to evaluate students' epistemological profiles on the concept of density, the journal's first paper to be published in the Open Science paradigm. We begin the debate by explaining the Open Science paradigm, which is a fundamental theme of this article. In the following, the sociocultural and classical cognitivist perspectives of learning are addressed, highlighting the core differences between them in investigations about learning scientific concepts, emphasizing the importance of modern forms of concept inventories to investigate students' conceptions in larger samples. Following a discussion about the method adopted by the authors, the Rasch Model, and the (false) dichotomy between qualitative and quantitative research, the Open Data policy was better explained to clarify its potentialities and how they can help to create networks of researchers investigating ways to bridge possible connections between the microgenetic domain, in which scientific conceptions are typically “measured”, and at least some elements from ontogenetic domain related to research subjects. To illustrate these notions, an example of the relevance of contextual variables in a well-known large-scale assessment program is provided. Overall, the paper emphasizes the relevance of Open Science in promoting research transparency, cooperation, and reproducibility, as well as its ability to enrich empirical studies by extending them to larger settings. |
