Honório Esteves: construction of the modern artist in Minas Gerais

Resumo: | The historiography of Brazilian art was dedicated to studying two moments that definedthe history of Brazilian art and had Minas Gerais as a stage: the Minas Gerais Baroque andthe modernist movement in the 1940s, which resulted in the construction of the PampulhaComplex and the arrival of Alberto da Veiga Guignard to found an art school. Althoughneglected by historiography, this period of the transition and construction of the newcapital of Minas Gerais had the production of numerous relevant artists such as theexemplary case of Honório Esteves. Of simple origin he study drawing in childhood, havingbeen awarded a scholarship from the Government of Minas Gerais to study at the Academyof Fine Arts. Besides being a painter, he was an inventor, restorer and chronicler. Concernedabout the destruction of historical monuments, he represented the Curral Del Rey beforeits destruction for the creation of the new capital: Belo Horizonte. This article is based onthe methodology of art history considering its formal, semantic and social aspects. |

La historiografía del arte brasileño se ha dedicado a estudiar dos momentos que definieron la historia del arte brasileño y tuvieron como escenario a Minas Gerais: el arte colonial de Minas Gerais y el movimiento modernista de la década de 1940, que resultó en la construcción del Complexo da Pampulha y la llegada de Alberto da Veiga Guignard para fundar una escuela de artes. A pesar de ser olvidado por la historiografía, este período abierto de transición y construcción de la nueva capital de Minas Gerais contó con la producción de numerosos artistas relevantes, como el caso ejemplar de Honório Esteves. De origen sencillo, logró estudiar dibujo en su niñez, habiendo sido contemplado con una beca del Gobierno de Minas Gerais para estudiar en la Academia de Bellas Artes. Además de la pintura, fue inventor, restaurador, cronista. Preocupado por la preservación de los monumentos históricos, representó a Curral Del Rey antes de su destrucción para la construcción de la nueva capital: Belo Horizonte. Este artículo se basa en la metodología de la historia del arte, considerando sus aspectos formales, semánticos y sociales. A historiografia da arte brasileira se dedicou a estudar dois momentos que definiram ahistória da arte brasileira e tiveram Minas Gerais como palco: a arte colonial mineira e omovimento modernista na década de 1940, que resultou na construção do Complexo daPampulha e na vinda de Alberto da Veiga Guignard para fundar uma escola de artes.Apesar de negligenciado pela historiografia, esse período lacunar da transição econstrução da nova capital mineira contou com a produção de inúmeros artistasrelevantes, como o caso exemplar de Honório Esteves. De origem simples, conseguiu aindana infância estudar desenho, tendo sido contemplado com uma bolsa do Governo deMinas para estudar na Academia de Belas Artes. Para além do ofício da pintura, foi inventor,restaurador, cronista. Preocupado com a preservação dos monumentos históricos,representou o Curral Del Rey antes de sua destruição para construção da nova capital: BeloHorizonte.
