De Vossa Mercê, António José d’Amorim: An interdisciplinary study of a 19th century letter

In a letter dated March 31, 1826, António José d’Amorim gave news to Diogo Finnie about the state of commerce and the political situation in Pernambuco. Taking into account the importance of paper in 19th century society, this article approaches the study of the letter in an interdisciplinary perspective, articulating areas that have the written text as an object, as a historical, linguistic and material source. The analysis starts from the material constitution of the support to reach aspects of its circulation and production context. The identification of the constitutive materials was carried out by portable instrumentation from the Physics Institute of USP. The study of the support is accompanied by the contextualization of historical and linguistic aspects of the document, through the identification of how the view of the trader contributes to the reconstruction of the conjuncture of the time and the characterization of the use that was made of writing in the period.
