Resumo: This paper’s purpose is to outline the explicative models for the changes in Erwin Panofsky’s iconological method. Historians tend to explain this process by focusing on the author’s definitive migration from Germany to the United States due to the rise of Nazism. Despite the undeniable importance of Panofsky’s migration, this explanation seems insufficient. Therefore, we consider the need to build new analytical pathways that consider what iconology has become in Panofsky’s work and in the History of Art in general.

A historiografia tende a explicar esse processo com base na migração definitiva do autor da Alemanha para os Estados Unidos em razão da ascensão do nazismo. Apesar da inegável importância desse elemento, a explicação para a trajetória de transformação do método não pode se esgotar nela. É, portanto, necessário construir novos percursos analíticos que considerem o que se tornou a iconologia na obra de Panofsky e na própria disciplina da história da arte.
