The resistence of a university: analysis of the Commission of In-quiry of UMG after the 1964 coup

Resumo: Days after the 1964 military coup, the army turned against the universities to purge every left wing militant that was still linked to the institutions. On the UMG, a commission was stablished with the support of general Carlos Luís Guedes. Focused on find if someone happened to be linked with “crimes against the government”, the investigation is a prime example of how a group can resist in an authoritarian moment. Also, the documentations show that, despite the resistance, some people were pleased to help with the new regime. Using the files of the commission (available at the AESI archive, of UFMG), the following article try to understand how the process of accommodation, resistance and collaboration happened. The event is a good example about how a university not only can be capable of accommodate different opinions, but also turn against authoritarian forces when necessary.

Na UMG1, uma comissão foi estabelecida com o apoio do general Carlos Luís Guedes. Focada em descobrir se alguém estava vinculado a “crimes contra o Estado”, a investigação é um grande exem-plo de como um grupo de pessoas pode resistir em um momento autoritário. Além disso, a docu-mentação mostra que, apesar das resistências, havia quem estava feliz em colaborar com o novo regime. Utilizando os arquivos da comissão (disponíveis no arquivo AESI, da UFMG), o artigo a seguir pretende compreender como o processo de acomodação, resistência e colaboração se deu.
