Resumo: Este estudo propôs a busca e a análise das impressões de leituras do mineralogista alemão Wilhelm Ludwig von Eschewege, sobre as obras de letrados luso-brasileiros. Em 1803, Eschewege estabeleceu uma relação duradoura com a Corte Portuguesa e, como funcionário, estruturou importantes contatos com reinóis e coloniais de uma ciência utilitarista. Parte dessa sociabilidade científica foi a leitura de escritos lusitanos, os quais foram representados na memória de viagem Pluto Brasilienses. Os escritos desses itinerários permitiram à historiografia estudar o "olhar do estrangeiro" ou "olhar do viajante" sobre temas caros à sociedade colonial e imperial, reforçando, muitas vezes, a representação de que a viagem seria somente uma experiência desses viajantes.ABSTRACT: This study tryies to find and analyze the reading impressions of the German Mineralogist Wilhelm Ludwig von Eschewege about the works of Portuguese Brazilian men of letters. In 1803, Eschewege established a long lasting relationship with the Portuguese Crown and, as its emplioyee, structured a network of important contacts among Portuguese subjects of both the Metropolis and the Colonies towards utilitarian science. Part of this scientific sociability was based on his readings of Portuguese writings, which were represented in his voyage memoir Pluto Brasilienses. This itineraries allowed Brazilian historians to study the "foreign gaze" or "traveler gaze" upon Brazilian themes, regarding Colonial and Imperial society in Brazil, reinforcing often the representation that the voyage was only the experience of that particular traveler.KEYWORDS: voyage, reading, naturalist travelers.
