Resumo: In If This Is a Man, by witnessing the death and survival in a Nazi concentration camp, Primo Levi describes the features of the many exterminated faces, yet remaining in the memory of the survivors, and also the camp, its form and operation. The camp’s physiology, with its internal rules, is closely linked to the quest of survival developed by prisoners. Two of its central features are the internal hierarchy among inmates and the functioning of the Exchange Market. Based on this second element, it is possible to examine the emergence of commercial trade at the camp, as an internal relational structure and alternative to the one imposed by Nazism.

Essa fisiologia do campo, com suas normas internas, está intimamente ligada à busca por sobrevivência desenvolvida pelos prisioneiros. Dois de seus traços centrais são a hierarquia interna entre detentos e o funcionamento da Bolsa de Trocas. A partir desse segundo elemento, é possível examinar o surgimento das trocas comerciais no campo como uma estrutura relacional interna e alternativa àquela imposta pelo nazismo.
