Resumo: THE ARRIVAL OF TABLE TENNIS IN BRAZIL: ORIGIN AND MEANINGS OF PING-PONG AS A CIVILIZED PRACTICE (1902-1909)   Abstract: This work aimed to explore the beginnings of table tennis in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, in order, from their example, to better understand the role played by modern sports in Brazilian society during the early 20th century. As a method, a historical cut from 1902 to 1909 was used, with analyzes that started from a quantitative and exploratory approach, and procedures of documentary and bibliographic research in newspapers of the time. It was found that table tennis, imported from England, arrived in Brazil as a new fashion game, a symbol of modernity and social distinction, therefore compatible with the civilizing aspirations of the ruling elites. The findings of this work not only contribute to the historiography of table tennis in Brazil, but also add to the reflections on leisure activities in the early 20th century. Keywords: Table tennis. History.LA LLEGADA DEL TENIS DE MESA A BRASIL: ORIGEN Y SIGNIFICADOS DEL PING-PONG COMO PRÁCTICA CIVILIZADA (1902-1909)   Resumen: Este trabajo tuvo como objetivo explorar los inicios del tenis de mesa en São Paulo y Río de Janeiro, para, a partir de su ejemplo, comprender mejor el papel que jugó el deporte moderno en la sociedad brasileña a principios del siglo XX. Se utilizó como método un corte histórico de 1902 a 1909, con análisis que partieron de un enfoque cuantitativo y exploratorio, y procedimientos de investigación documental y bibliográfica en periódicos de la época. Se constató que el tenis de mesa, importado de Inglaterra, llegó a Brasil como un nuevo juego de moda, símbolo de modernidad y distinción social, por lo tanto compatible con las aspiraciones civilizatorias de las élites gobernantes. Los hallazgos de este trabajo no solo contribuyen a la historiografía del tenis de mesa en Brasil, sino que también se suman a las reflexiones sobre las actividades de ocio a principios del siglo XX. Historia.Para uma melhor compreensão dos significados atribuídos ao tênis de mesa na sociedade brasileira durante o início do século XX, este trabalho objetivou estruturar a história das suas primeiras manifestações em São Paulo e no Rio de Janeiro. Como método foi utilizado um recorte histórico que vai de 1902 a 1909, com análises que partiram de uma abordagem qualitativa e exploratória, e procedimentos de pesquisas documentais e bibliográficas em jornais da época. Constatou se que o tênis de mesa, importado da Inglaterra, chega ao Brasil como um novo jogo da moda, símbolo de modernidade e de distinção social, portanto compatível aos anseios civilizadores das elites dominantes.
