Resumo: The aim of this work is to understand the meaning of the work for a group of recyclable material recyclers in an urban waste sorting plant in Arcos, Brazil, from a socio-constructive approach. In order to do so, we sought to understand the meaning that these workers attribute to their work, as well as to describe their life trajectory and the perception they have of the activity they develop. The sense of work for this group of scavengers is closer to suffering than to pleasure, although it is difficult to explain where one begins and where the other ends, given that at times these workers were satisfied and happy to be there. However, to affirm that it is pleasure is to deny the trajectory of each one and the suffering experienced as a result of the prejudice suffered by society.

Para ello, se buscó aprehender el sentido , así como describir su trayectoria de vida y la percepción que tienen de la actividad que desarrollan. El sentido del trabajo para este grupo de recolectores se acerca más al sufrimiento del placer, aunque es difícil explicar dónde empieza uno y donde termina el otro, teniendo en vista que en algunos momentos esos trabajadores se mostraron satisfechos y felices por estar allí. Sin embargo, afirmar que se trata de placer es renegar la trayectoria de cada uno y el sufrimiento vivido como consecuencia del prejuicio sufrido por la sociedad.Objetiva-se compreender o sentido do trabalho para um grupo de catadores de materiais recicláveis em uma usina de triagem de resíduos urbanos em Arcos, região centro-oeste de Minas Gerais, a partir de uma abordagem sócioconstrucionista. Optou-se por pesquisar os catadores de materiais recicláveis por ser esta uma atividade relativamente recente, que surgiu devido ao acúmulo do “lixo” nos centros urbanos e da necessidade de reciclar alguns de seus componentes. O sentido do trabalho para este grupo de catadores aproxima-se mais do sofrimento que do prazer, embora seja difícil explicar onde começa um e onde termina o outro, tendo em vista que em alguns momentos esses trabalhadores mostraram-se satisfeitos e felizes por estarem lá.
